-----------
An almost forgotten coffee species, an unusual cup, and an experience made for those who want to taste something genuinely rare in the coffee world. This lot is neither Arabica nor Robusta: it is Coffea racemosa, a wild coffee species with tiny beans, low caffeine content, and extremely limited production.
In the cup, it offers a highly distinctive profile with red fruit, mandarin, quince, warm spice, and an herbal note reminiscent of eucalyptus. It is not trying to taste like a classic coffee. Its value lies precisely in showing another possible side of coffee.
Flavor Profile
- Main notes: Glühwein, quince, mandarin, eucalyptus, blackcurrant
- Acidity: lively, citrus-driven, and fruit-forward
- Body: light to medium, delicate, and clean
- Aftertaste: spiced, herbal, and fruity, with an elegant and unusual impression
Origin and Processing
This coffee comes from Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa, specifically the Hluhluwe area, where Racemosa grows in its natural habitat. Each plant produces around 100 g of cherry, equal to roughly 10 g of green coffee.
The washed process was chosen to present the species as clearly as possible, without hiding it behind intense fermentation. The goal is not to create an artificial experimental profile, but to let Racemosa express its own identity: tiny beans, low caffeine, and a spiced, citrusy, herbal cup.
Racemosa is also interesting for the future of coffee because of its natural heat tolerance, drought resistance, and resilience to disease.
